Growing up in Mexico City I always wondered what all those pocket size books printed in sepia ink contained, they were called “Cuentos” or “Revistas del Corazon”. They were read mostly by women. So, as a boy they were almost forbidden for me. However, later in life I ventured into those pages only to find tormented dramas, ideal love and romance, adventures in fantastic lands or crowded cities often with fairly good illustrations.
When I moved to the US, some of the “cuentos” imagery came with me and I began to freely mix it with similar images from Asian and American comic books. I discovered their vast connections with the “cuentos” I was familiar with and rich visual elements. In my current work, I am using a very limited palette, mostly black and gold drawings, on prints and on ceramic tablets. I take inspiration from the Dada and Surrealist movements to congregate images in a common space and time, surrounded by perennial vegetation and rhythmic elements. My attempt is to develop a place without linear scripts or predicable end, hoping to enable to touch personal experiences, memories, emotions and the dreams of the spectators.
